Optical spectroscopy: fundamentals and applications

Date & Time: May 10th 2012 (2:00 PM – 4:0 PM) and May 11th 2012 (9:00 AM – 11:00 AM)
Course Level: Advanced
Instructor: Prof. Carlos Rudamas, Escuela de Física, Universidad de El Salvador, El Salvador

We will start with the fundamental principles of optical spectroscopy. The characteristics of light sources (e.g. frequency spectrum, linewidths, and tuning ranges) that are important for its applications in optical spectroscopy will be treated in detail. The optical components (e.g. mirrors, prism and gratings) and the experimental equipment in spectroscopy (e.g. spectrographs, monochromators, and detectors) will be also discussed. Applications of optical spectroscopy in physics, geophysics, biology, medicine and environmental sciences will be also presented in the second part of these lectures.
