Fiber lasers and applications - Supercontinuum laser sources and applications

The generation of supercontinuum in photonic crystal fibres has been a subject of intense research in recent years. Two-octave spanning SC spectrum has been reported by several authors. Such a broad light source has many applications in metrology, medical imaging, telecommunications and others. A requirement for efficient generation of broadband supercontinuum is low dispersion, especially when long pump pulses are used. In this respect, PCF allows engineering the dispersion by designing properly the microstructure and, for example, PCFs with the first zero dispersion wavelength well below 1.3 μm can be fabricated. Moreover, the small mode area in PCFs increases the nonlinearity, thus, reducing the need for high intensity.

The course is intended to review fundamental concepts and applications of modern supercontinuum laser sources. The course covers the following topics: (i) fundamental concepts, (ii) typical applications, (iii) photonic crystal fibres review, (iv) nonlinear effects review, (v) supercontinuum laser source phenomenology, (vi) novel supercontinuum laser sources.
