The participants will perform a series of experiments with Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). The experiments illustrate the optical properties of LEDs. The instructor will guide and assist the participants through the experiments. The purpose is to provide the participants with practical and valuable information on the technology of illumination with LEDs. Participants will learn to understand and interpret the main optical parameters of LEDs and will have the opportunity to build is own basic LED basic illumination system.


  • Lecture on illumination with super bright LEDs basic concepts and state of the art.
  • LED source radiometry: measurements of radiation flux and of the spectrum and spatial distribution of LED light to determine its main optical properties as a light source. The differences between high power LEDs, signal indicators LEDs and traditional illumination sources will be demonstrated experimentally.
  • LED light colorimetry: design and construction of simple system with an RGB LED. Basic principles of the additive superposition of colors. Experimental demonstration of the color tunability of LED light.
  • Optics fun with LEDs: Design and development of three optical toys with LEDs: The lighting ice, the Jedi sword and the luminous beer.
  • Design, building and analysis of a LED illumination system. The participants will develop one of the following projects: a simple LED light bulb, a system of streer public illumination (at scale), a RGB traffic light.
